Amelia Toro

Colombian designer, Amelia Toro looks to emphasize the feminine silhouette in her designs without leaving out comfort.  Her permanence in Europe, along with her studies in the United States, marked this designer with a tendency towards freedom and individuality of each person.

Amelia believes in comfortable and practical clothes.  Each piece enchants mixtures and tones that are pale and earthy.  She refrains from strong, shining colors, saying "to handle the color, it is necessary to identify with it."

All of her designs have served to help stake her claim in the international fashion scene.  "The true luxury is in having comfort, sensuality and femininity," that is the essence of her dresses.

crispin & basilio

Crispin and Basilio are two fictional characters from a 19th-century Filipino novel.

Los Angeles-based designer Donny Barrios always had an inquisitiveness for the different aspects of clothing and fashion.  Growing up in Manila, he then entered the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, focusing on those very interests.  Menswear at that time was at the height of its modern resurgence, and Donny gravitated toward it.  Women's fashion was always just a passing thought.  However, with the launch of crispin and basilio in the fall of 2006, Donny transformed that passing thought into fancy.

Early in his career, Donny was already merchandising for J Crew Inc.  Just prior to c&b, he spent two years as the head menswear designer for a Los Angeles contemporary label.  The company restructured, and Donny left soon after.  The experience allowed him to be more intimately familiar with women's clothing, stirring a familiar passion which opened a new creative door.

"Designing women's clothing was spurred by my curiosity of its scope," says Donny.  "The options available and the different choices made are of a different intricacy."

The clothing, beautiful whilst thoughtful, comes from two sincere intents: One is that of balancing design and technique with the clever and the unexpected.  And the other, the pursuit of attractiveness true and current to the c&b woman-- the concept that begins every process.

Since the debut of the line, crispin & basilio has been recognized by the industry as a rising talent, with ELLE and WWD naming Barrios a "designer to watch" and NYLON heralding him as one of the "young talents changing the face of LA fashion."

Caroline D'Amore

If Los Angeles fashion week has one face, it might belong to Caroline D’Amore. Over the course of her career, the 24-year-old has walked hundreds of runway shows in this town – sometimes up to 14 a week – and left an impression that’s hard to ignore. At 5-foot-9, with a mane of shoulder-length brown hair, D’Amore is recognizable even to those who’ve never heard her name.

Her distinctive gait has helped. Part coltish gambol, part saucy hip swing, D’Amore’s stride is often accompanied by a shoulder roll that makes her seem more voluptuous than her rail-thin frame would otherwise suggest.

But you’ve seen her elsewhere too. Her sultry, heavy-lidded eyes and Mona Lisa half-smile have appeared in ads for Pellegrino water and Deere Colhoun handbags. Her skills at the turntables have laid down the vibe for local clubbers and party-goers. Her swimwear line recently debuted in Vegas, and she’s landed a handful of small roles in Hollywood.

No surprise, then, that in person, she carries herself with an effervescence and almost nervous energy that’s a sharp contrast to the practiced ennui of the average runway model.

One of the four daughters raised by single dad and pizza parlor entrepreneur Joe D’Amore, she went from human coat hanger to Hollywood multihyphenate: model-actress-designer-DJ-restaurateur-writer.

D’Amore’s independence was born of necessity – she was only 5 when her mother died (her mom’s signature is tattooed inside her left wrist) – and has served her well, but fate also stepped in at the right moment. First, when she was discovered six years ago having dinner at Ago in Los Angeles and again on the streets of New York City, where she’d gone for what was supposed to be a brief visit.

She ended up staying for a year. At 17, she was appearing in Teen and Teen Vogue, walking the runway in New York for designers such as Diane von Furstenberg and learning a valuable lesson.

“You can get what you want if you act like there is no other option,” she says.

Perhaps that’s the key. It’s certainly what led her to become a DJ. When a producer called to find out if she knew “a hot-looking female DJ” for an event he was producing at the El Rey, she nominated herself. As soon as she put down the phone, she called a friend for advice, dropped five grand on equipment and taught herself just enough to get through the event.

Since then, being a DJ has come easy. Three seasons ago, D’Amore brought her skills at the turntable to the parties of L.A. Fashion Week, first by playing Louis Verdad’s after-party, and then taking her turntables on stage for a Meghan Fabulous show.

She’ll tell you that she prefers being a DJ to modeling because “it actually takes talent,” which might explain her eagerness to try any new venture. She launched a line of swimwear – D’Amore by Marceau – at the Las Vegas trade shows, and it’s scheduled to roll out next summer. (Her first line, a collection of tank tops called H. Starlet, hit the market five years ago.)

She says she plans to start a line of hemp bags, but one wonders if that’s possible, especially because she says she’s turning all her attention to acting. D’Amore recently appeared alongside Vincent Pastore, Talia Shire and Ronnie Marmo in “Pizza with Bullets,” a Mafioso-mozzarella romantic comedy involving a pizza parlor owner and a dying don.

Her role – the girlfriend of pizza shop owner Johnny Casanova – had a familiar feel for D’Amore, who in August opened a D’Amore’s Pizza restaurant with her younger sister Bonnie in Tarzana, eschewing the lure of Hollywood because she wanted to do it right.

“I wanted to have something cute with my sister,” she said. “And keep my dad’s legacy going and keep it in the family.”

She has also co-written a pair of movie scripts, one with her fiance filmmaker Matthew Ross. “One’s about a blackjack player, and the other one’s about a female DJ, go figure, right?”

Looking to the future, D’Amore says she’s focused “100%” on acting. “Not just acting – filmmaking.” So does that mean what she really wants to do is direct?

“Are you kidding? That would be my dream.”

Kevan Hall

Detroit-born Kevan Hall's fashion creativity emerged early. By the age of seven, he knew he wanted to be a fashion designer. After attending Cass Technical High School in Detroit, where he studied fashion design, he won first place as "Designer of Tomorrow" - a scholarship sponsored by the Los Angeles-based Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. While studying in California, he made a vision-enhancing trip to Europe, where at the houses of Cardin, Dior and most notably, Givenchy his lifelong love of luxury and haute couture was once again sparked. Upon graduation from the Fashion Institute, he received the Peacock Award for “Outstanding Fashion Design".

In 1982, Hall with his wife and partner, Deborah launched Kevan Hall Couture. His collection melded a more relaxed couture look with sensible pricing that pleased retailers like Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, I. Magnin and other fine stores nationwide.

Hall was nominated in 1988 by fashion retailers and the press as one of California’s Top Designers. In 1989, he was not only included in the “Soul on Seventh Avenue” show sponsored by Fairchild Publications, but was also chosen by the NAACP to receive their “Great American Designer” award. In 1990, his participation in the national Absolut Vodka campaign featured in Vanity Fair underscored his broad-based appeal. In 1992, he was honored by the Center of Performing Arts in Southern California with a 10-year fashion retrospective. For many, this would be a career capper. For Hall, it was only a stepping stone as he branched out into motion pictures, acting as costume consultant on 1997’s “Gridlock” and “Eve’s Bayou” (the most successful independent film of the year).

Redefining glamour for a new generation is an interpretive art. Redefining the hallowed house of Halston into the next millennium was an even more challenging task. But Kevan Hall--who stepped into the prestigious position of Design and Creative Director from fall 1998 - spring 2000 revived the dormant brand to its former glory. His sleek eveningwear was worn by a distinguished coterie of celebrated artists- including Celine Dion, Sharon Stone, Angela Bassett, Charlize Theron, and Salma Hayek.

In 2002, he launched his own signature, Kevan Hall Collection with a fashion philosophy that emphasizes purity of style, incomparable tailoring and sensuously draped streamlined silhouettes; Hall has a natural design sense of sophisticated elegance and uncluttered modern design. Hall’s designs have been embraced by fashion retailers and the press. In 2001, Absolut Vodka honored Hall by showcasing his spring collection in their “Tribute to African Designers” worldwide tour. His lovely atelier in Los Angeles was featured in the July 2002 issue of Interior Design magazine. It confirmed his keen eye for design and impeccable color sense. Also in 2002, Hall won the 47th Annual Gold Coast Fashion Award in Chicago as “Designer of the Year”. In 2005, Hall was awarded “Stylemaker of the Year” by Life & Style Magazine for his ‘drop-dead glamour’ as seen on the red carpet with Felicity Huffman, Vivica A. Fox, Virginia Madsen, Garcelle Beauvais, Debra Messing and Renee Zellweger.

Hall has made guest appearances on national TV shows such as Inside Edition, The Better Half, SoapTalk, the Jane Pauley Show and Extreme Makeover where he discussed fashion‘s current trends. He has given lectures at the Norman Lear Center of the University of Southern California and for the Costume Council at the Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art on his inspirations and influences when designing his collection.

With his own Signature collection, his philosophy of fashion has remained true to those early days. "I enjoy the process of design from concept to execution," he states. "But the most gratifying part is seeing a design come to life on a beautiful woman." Rejecting trends and fads in favor of a lasting signature look, Hall's hallmark of glamour with a modern sensibility is a priceless gift to the welcoming world.

Leila Hafzi

Leila Hafzi presented her first collection in Stavanger, Norway, in 1997.  With this, she introduced the idea of organic and ethical trade to the high end of the fashion industry.  During the past ten years, the designer has built a network which represents the very best Nepal has to offer in tailoring and fabrics.  Since then, her goal has remained unchanged: to introduce and represent eco and ethical trade in the fashion industry on a global basis, and in the future to develop an entirely environmental friendly production cycle.

With her company, Nepal Production AS, established in 2005, the designer has started looking towards the international market.  In 2007, the collection, Alpha Vert- spring/ summer 08, was presented at fashion fairs in both Paris and Oslo, resulting in Leila Hafzi being awarded "Designer of the Year," as well as being chosen as the first Norwegian designer ever to create a piece for La Redoute.  So far in 2008, we have launched one collection, O3- autumn/ winter 09, at fairs in Oslo and New York.

The design and production company, Nepal Production DA, was established in 2005.  The company is a member of The Ethical Trading Initiative- Norway (IEH, multi-stakeholder initiative involving companies, employers' organizations, trade unions and NGOs).  IEH's activities are based on the acknowledgment that companies have a responsibility towards human rights (including internationally accepted labor rights) in their supply chain.

Although Leila Hafzi has first-hand experience with the production processes in a developing country, the road to reach our goal will stretch over some time.  In countries such as Nepal, the challenges surrounding ethical, ecological and organic garment production are sometimes overwhelming; however, we still keep stressing these issues.

Samora

Influenced early on by her mother's flair for couture and elegant sense of style, Samora's love for fashion began at a young age.  While growing up in Italy and Egypt, she began creating clothing for her friends and herself.  She found she had an incredible talent with an eye for style and design and was able to successfully translate that into a full-scale brand.

After graduating from USC in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts, Samora completed an internship at Stefanel, one of Milan's most exclusive design houses, where she learned necessary design skills.  As a result of this experience, she perfected the craft and intricacies of Italian couture, which are evident in her designs today.  On her travels throughout the Middle East and Europe, Samora acquired an abiding love for combining many cultural influences, which she has beautifully blended with the invigorating glamour of Hollywood in her collections.

One of the first designers at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox in Los Angeles, Samora launched her first collection during Fall 2002.  She has been at the forefront of Italian couture, earning her a stellar reputation with Hollywood and fashionistas alike.  She is best known for her exquisite, luxurious and high-quality fabrics, as well as her romantic and elegant looks.  Her clientele includes some of today's most notable trendsetters, such as Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria and Aisha Tyler, among others.

Sheiki Jeans are well-known for their tailored fit.  Each pair features a 36" rise through the leg and two-percent stretch to cling in all the right places.  The back pocket have a distinctive shape to help lift and round out the butt.  Celebrities and trendsetters around the globe have been wearing Sheiki since its inception.  And Sheila's success with this core customer base has allowed her to expand her company to include shirts, hoodies, sweats, dresses and accessories.  It is Sheila's handiwork and intrinsic artistic talent that provides the Sheiki line with its edgy flair.

In just 2.5 years, Sheila has propelled her company to iconic status.  Fashion hotspots including Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami and New York are strong markets for the Sheiki product, and Sheila is a well-known celebrity in the nightlife scene.  Superstars including Ashanti, Audrina Partridge of The Hills, Kim Kardashian, Kate Bosworth and Britney Spears are big fans.  Actress Jenna Jameson has signed on to be the exclusive face of Sheiki Jeans for 2008.  Sheiki and Sheila Marie have been featured in a variety of national fashion publications and television shows, including Women's Wear Daily, Apparel News, Star Magazine, Luck Magazine, ABC News and the Tyra Banks Show.

A frequent traveler, Sheila draws inspiration from other cultures and traditions to inspire her clothing line.  When in the States, she divides her time between her home in Las Vegas and her factory and showroom in Los Angeles.

Suh-Tahn

The Suh-Tahn philosophy was created with the help and balance of natural and man-made forces, inspired by architecture and shapes found in nature.

Established in Los Angles in late 2005, Suh-Tahn debuted their first Fall/ Winter ready-to-wear collection.  The collaboration between longtime friends Shannon Nataf and Dimitry Tcharfas began with the motivation to bring intensity to design that is matched with exceptional quality and attention to detail, creating a fusion of art and innovation.

Shannon Nataf: Raised in Los Angles, Shannon Nataf began modeling at the age of six for both print and runway.  At 18, Nataf started her studies and competed in volleyball at the University of San Francisco.  It was here that she sought her passion for philosophy, anthropology and sociology, ultimately uniting historic and worldly studies with creative projects.  Nataf began working as a design consultant, traveling internationally to develop trends.  Beginning with the conviction that fashion goes deeper than fabric, Suh-Tahn existed without designs but with philosophy.

Dimitry Tcharfas: Dimitry's motivation for design stems from the organic.  He draws his greatest inspiration from nature and the way it constantly revolutionizes yet remains somewhat unchanged.  He is intrigued by both the functionality of objects and his surroundings and brings that to the table in the creation of Suh-Tahn.

Dimitry was born and spent his early childhood in the Ukraine.  At the age of nine, he moved with his family to Los Angeles.  Driven by a passion for self-expression and appreciation for textiles, he chose at an early age to engage in an affair with fashion.  He spent most of his adolescence honing his own personal style and conceiving ways to implement the elements of style that he felt were missing in the Los Angeles fashion scene.  During this time, he studied costume and drew inspiration from both ancient costumes and the natural world.

Tulle and Cloth Logic

L.A. hipsters know Tulle for its inexpensive vintage-style women's wear - its attention to vivid colors, details and gorgeous linings.

Its new boyfriend brand, Cloth Logic, is just as affordable and inspired. But well- known? Not so much.

That's about to change.

The young, trendsetting trio behind Tulle and Cloth Logic are introducing the menswear brand with a runway debut Oct. 16 during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.

"It's the first exhibit of Cloth Logic and Tulle together, so it's very fitting for us to have this love affair," says designer Leon Shpayer, a 30-year-old native of Russia, who is all charm on this recent October morning.

Shpayer is inside the Compton warehouse he shares with Tulle designers Jennifer Smith and Anoushka Alden. The three young designers work for parent company Morning Glow Inc., which was founded in 1999 to create women's and men's outerwear.

But as Shpayer puts it, the company has "bloomed" to include flirty wool coats, dresses and sweater shirts.

These garments that hang from the rolling racks at the warehouse are part of the spring runway collection bound for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and they're ready to go.

"A lot of designers wait until the last minute and then decide, `Oh, we want to do a show,' and then they're scrambling to get all their samples ready and cut and fitted," says Smith, 27. "We don't like to be rushed."

For up-and-comers, nothing is bigger than this five-day event, which gets started Sunday and draws thousands - from industry professionals to fashionistas from the worlds of retail, media and Hollywood.

So, how is it that the creative team behind Tulle and Cloth Logic appear calm?

"We're just mellow people," says Shpayer, who was in the middle of drawing up fall '09 looks when he paused to talk about Fashion Week.

It's an event that promises to do more than introduce Cloth Logic to the world. It also promises to take Tulle to the next level.

"The international community will see us, so we're all excited," he says.

The pieces are a reflection of trendy L.A., but also appeal to Tulle and Cloth Logic's demographic of young, creative professionals with a longing for the timeless style of the '40s and '50s.

"A lot of the big misconceptions about fashion in L.A. is that it's sloppy, or lazy, or garish," says Smith, sporting a hot-pink measuring tape over her shoulders. "But people here are very considerate in the way they dress. If they look slightly under-dressed you can bet they really thought about it."

Certainly, the same can be said of Tulle and Cloth Logic's creations, some of which borrow inspiration from the way people dress in neighborhoods such as Silver Lake, as well as the pages of old Sears catalogs.

"We take modern bodies and we apply our vintage aesthetic to it," says Alden, 26. "Maybe it's a vintage button or a collar that we were really inspired by.

"We just take an element and then expand it or reduce it if it's too much," she says. "You have to filter it with a modern eye, otherwise you'll look like you're wearing a costume."

WhitleyKros

WhitleyKros is an emerging fashion label by Marissa Ribisi and Sophia Banks that debuted her line at LA Fashion Week 2008. The label name is a blend of two cultures, US and Australia. "Whitley" is named after a street in Los Angeles and "Kros" is a street in Sydney.

Whitley Kros is a gypsy child. That's how we've always seen her. With eyes just above the tall grass, a wanderer, a nomad, an inspirer of greatness in all she meets. Comfortable in cafes, or standing at the sea, or stretched out on foreign rooftops under long bolts of purple sky Whitley Kros moves through life like a magical spirit. Whitley Kros is one you yearn to touch.

She's always been that way. Nothing any of us could do. No talking down a dreamer. Just the same as all of those who came before her, Birken, Korrina, Guggenheim, Bowie. Whitley communes with each of them. Leaves her tiny handwritten poems and grainy black and white photographs slipped between the pages of old classics. She is not here collect, she is here to inspire. All she keeps is that which fits inside her satchel. Her trusted suitcase. Pick up. Move along. Discover. Impact.

And that's what this is; our attempt to impact, our attempt to share. Whitley Kros is nothing if not an ideal. An example of what true beauty can be. She is what we picture when we discuss a natural, a muse. She is indefinable in so many ways, and she is here. Our gift to you.
